6 THINGS PEOPLE WITH ADHD ARE TIRED OF READING
If you’re here because you have ADHD, welcome. We’ve got a community of people who love, support each other and experience success every day despite having ADHD.
If you’re here because you have a loved one who has ADHD, you’ll find lots of resources here to educate yourself.
Those two reasons are what made me write this post.
A lot of people with ADHD are misunderstood and hear all sorts of comments that make them feel lonely, misunderstood and confused.
And I remember being in that same position.
Having to google to find out more about my ADHD only to find a ton of topics on ADHD in boys. Thinking how my ADHD was so different from what they were describing. “I am not hyper like a little boy,” I remember thinking to myself.
In fact, that’s one of the major reasons I started my business. There were not enough resources for people to understand how ADHD showed up in girls and women because it was different.
For example, I was not hyper. I just has a lot of ideas in my mind and couldn’t figure out why I used to forget things that I needed to do. I thought something was really off with me maybe because that’s how I felt people treated me.
In short, this post will cover all the things that a lot of people think about ADHD that are not true.
It will cover:
6 things that people think about ADHD that aren’t true.
What is the truth about ADHD.
And how you can be able to change your thoughts about ADHD if you have a loved or you have just been diagnosed.
Let’s jump straight into it.
ADHD IS A MADE UP DIAGNOSIS
A lot of people make ignorant comments like “Aren’t we all just a little bit ADHD?” And such comments always come from people who think that ADHD is non existent.
They often associate ADHD as just but an excuse to being lazy. And a lot of people living with ADHD will be termed as lazy more often than not. And that can cause some serious self esteem issues.
But the truth of the matter is that ADHD can and does affect people living with ADHD. It’s symptoms do affect how productive we are and our ability to focus on tasks.
And no, we are not lazy. Our minds just work a lot differently than yours.
For most Neurotypical brains, it’s easy to follow advice such as remove all distractions. But for a person with ADHD, that kind of advice will not help improve their productivity. Their minds will be distracted no matter what.
And then there’s the lack of sleep because of anxiety. And of course a lot of people will say that they experience this but if you have ADHD, it occurs every single day. It’s not a one time thing when you’ve got a big project. It happens every day of your life whether you have a big project or not.
That’s why there are techniques in place to help adults living with ADHD cope and become more productive even if they have ADHD.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK IT IS A MADE UP DIAGNOSIS.
Find articles about ADHD. Educate yourself about ADHD and then you can make up an educated opinion of whether or not ADHD is a made up diagnosis.
Better yet, if you have a loved one with ADHD, genuinely ask them how they feel and listen. Listening is the most critical part of your learning process.
If you still believe that it is a made up diagnosis, then read on to really find out if your thoughts are true.
ADHD KIDS CAN OUTGROW THEIR ADHD
A lot of people don’t know that kids who have ADHD usually will grow into their adulthood with ADHD. Most people will tell you that your child will outgrow their ADHD but that is not the case.
In fact, a recent study showed that 80% of children who had ADHD still had ADHD in their adulthood.
So if your child has been diagnosed with ADHD, then it’s good to educate yourself on how you can help them focus in school and stay productive without feeling like they have a disability when they can’t get their grades up.
Further more, the skills you will teach a child with ADHD when they’re kids will help them navigate their lives easily as an adult with ADHD.
ADHD IS OVERDIAGNOSED
This one is a major. Thoughts of ADHD Over diagnosis comes in because ADHD can be self diagnosed.
The more you read about articles on ADHD, the more you realize that you might have ADHD.
And because of that, a lot of people tend to lean on the fact that there is no real way to truly know if you have ADHD often stating that it is an over diagnosis when you can simply stop being lazy, change your habits and become a more productive person.
But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
A lot of the symptoms of ADHD are far much more than just being lazy like lack of sleep, daydreaming, forgetting tasks that need to be done and even feelings of anxiety.
There are a lot more symptoms than just not being productive that will tell you if you have ADHD.

Find out about the symptoms of ADHD and then you’ll realize that ADHD is not over diagnosed.
ADHD MAINLY AFFECTS LITTLE BOYS
This is one that I really struggled with. I couldn’t understand how my ADHD was being associated to the ADHD that affected little boys. Mine was different. In most women, it shows up as Inattentive ADHD rather than hyperactive ADHD which is most common in little boys.
Aderall IS MORDERN DAY METH
This is honestly one of the most annoying thing any person with ADHD will be told.
The truth is that Aderall reduces hyperactivity and improves attention span.
Meth, on the other hand, is a drug that has destroyed people’s lives.
Now, the reason why people think that these two drugs are similar is because of the compounds found in each, methamphetamine and amphetamine.
These drugs are chemically related but the difference is that meth has more powerful effects because more of the drug gets into the brain making it more likely to be misused.
Furthermore, Aderall is an approved drug that acts as a stimulant to help people with ADHD focus. It is nothing like meth and is used solely to increase focus and alertness in people with ADHD.
YOU CAN’T HAVE ADHD IF YOU WERE GOOD IN SCHOOL
Well, ADHD can be triggered by a lot of things. For example, I got my ADHD when I gave birth to my baby and got postpartum depression.
ADHD can manifest when you’ve undergone stressful situations for a prolonged period. You aren’t necessarily born with it.
That’s why you can start experiencing symptoms of ADHD later in life after finishing school.
But a lot of the people who talk about ADHD, include this as a symptom. And this which makes people who never had problems with their grades in school really question if they have ADHD.
There are many stages in a woman’s life that she can discover that she is exhibiting signs of ADHD.
WHAT TO SAY IF YOU HAVE A LOVED ONE WITH ADHD
Research and read more about ADHD so that you can make more informed decisions about a loved one who has ADHD. Then, change the language that you use around your loved one. Instead of making ignorant remarks, ask them how their day is going. Instead of calling them lazy, encourage them to get up by exciting them. That will motivate them to get up. And finally, help them. People with ADHD hardly ever ask for help. They will try to do it by themselves. So when you get an opportunity to lend an extra hand with their chores, that really goes a long way in easing the pressure and anxiety they experience.
